Key Takeaways: The Reality On Deep Fakes

This month's Executive Briefing was on "The Reality of Deep Fakes." Our panelists were Kirk Somers, Andy Christiansen, and Edward O'Meara, representing the legal, finance, and marketing functions.

Deepfakes are easy to create and difficult to detect.

Deep fakes have been around for over thirty years in the entertainment industry. The difference now is the tools don’t cost millions, they are basically free. Worse, the threats are coming in from highly sophisticated, well-organized, and coordinated criminal groups that often target unprepared companies of all sizes.

Five Key Takeaways

  1. A C-level executive needs to be accountable. They will need support from a cross-functional team to assess and mitigate risks as part of business continuity and disaster recovery.

  2. Deepfake threats are internal and external, and disaster response plans must include both types. Unfortunately, they must be updated very frequently as the threats emerge.

  3. Financial security is a top concern and needs a careful verification process.  Account verification protocols are critical in preventing cyber fraud. Strategies include advanced verification tools, regular security audits, and continuous employee education on the latest cyber fraud tactics.

  4. Employees need continuous education to learn about warning signs and be updated as technology becomes more sophisticated.

  5. Stay ahead of technological advancements in detection and prevention. Invest in advanced verification tools that can effectively counter deep fake technology. This will provide a strong defense against potential threats.

Next month's topic is “Half your employees are looking for a new job. Why? And what can you do?”  The panel will be Kimberly Sharman EvansChris Martin, and Michael Peerson.
